So I was just writing my last paper for grad school yesterday, and I wondered in passing what Annoyed Librarian would have to say about my topic. To take a break from the marvelous Breeding invasion I was in the midst of, I hopped over to LJ only to discover that *gasp* AL has departed!:
lj.libraryjournal.com/blogs/annoyedlibrarian/2018/03/29/end-of-the-al/ Much of my library school program experience, joined with experience and application on the job as I worked my way through LIS, has been equally provoked and encouraged by AL (along with the Librarian Problems tumblr, of course). Many a sharp inclusion in course discussions, particularly in Denver where I think we liked to be provoked a little more, was unknowingly had by AL (or was it unknowingly?!). At the end of it all, we can probably all agree, even the Stoics among us, that a voice that went against the grain from one of our own never failed to amaze, sometimes delight, sometimes horrify, but definitely always amaze. I'm hoping that now that I am a Master of Library Science, I can be humbled again by catching up with all that I've missed, or maybe didn't even realize I was already partaking. And yes, wear robes, smoke if that's your thing, imbibe or caffeinate accordingly, and talk about things that are meaningful, things that we are passionate about, and what we are doing and can do about them.
Fortunately, there is a space online for now! : libparlor.com/ I hope to visit regularly, and come away a little more rejuvenated and aware each time. As much as I love, love, LOVE LibrarianProblems tumblr, I'm finding that I also need some depth (and I didn't even know it!). I stumbled across Library Lost & Found, and I feel like I've been found: https://librarylostfound.com/
Right so, I'm used to Flickr for CC images, and I've heard that DeviantArt is a good place to go as well, especially for simple backgrounds. (I'm not [yet] much of a graphic design folk, so I'm not usually looking for simple, complex, or even neutral backgrounds most of the time...but this was an excellent tidbit!) Here's some new places that I hope to explore: iStockphoto and morgueFILE (which sounds super macabre, but I don't think it really is, but I'm still intrigued). These may be old hat for many professionals, so please feel free to comment on where you have success finding images.
Website companion to the print book I'm reading? Yes please! In preparation for the ALAO Conference 2016 in a couple of days, I've been reading about UX for libraries so I can pretend I know something. ;) Even though Aaron Schmidt is no longer available as one of the Preconference Workshop speakers and facilitators, I'm finding his books about UX in libraries palatable and easy to digest (especially for a novice like me). I'm hoping to finish up his 2012 book, User Experience (UX) Design for Libraries with Amanda Etches, by Thursday, but I'm fine with prolonging my reading and learning time by coming across additional resources along the way, such as the companion site to the book thanks to ALA TechSource: www.alatechsource.org/user-experience-ux-design-for-libraries-18 I came across this gem on page 44 (though I may have just missed it earlier), and there's purportedly a card sort template!!! Here's to hoping that in 4 years it's also not obsolete (though change is certainly our one constant good, eh?)!
Why are all the things I'm learning about and discovering suddenly becoming obsolete... #Trend : oedb.org/ilibrarian/farewell-ilibrarian/ (Oh well, oldies can still be goodies for further inspiration.)
