The American Library Association (ALA) Code of Ethics is the standard that guides how I and many others approach libraries, information access, and each other.
A resounding note for me is in Article II: intellectual freedom. This concept that everyone has "the right to freedom of thought and expression" is non-negotiable. Denying this right for anyone means denying this right for ourselves. We live this paradigm out each day in libraries, and intellectual freedom is woven throughout all other aspects of librarianship and connects all types of libraries. |
